Sheikh Mohammad Mosque

Reconstruction as an Archaeological Museum and Revival of the 17th-Century Architectural Heritage While Preserving Its Historical and Cultural Value

Located in the “Kalakucha” quarter of the ancient settlement of Basqal in the Ismayilli region, the Sheikh Mohammad Mosque is one of Azerbaijan’s state-protected historical and architectural monuments dating back to the 17th century. Preserving the memory of centuries, this rare structure consists of a prayer hall and two adjoining rooms, designed in an L-shaped layout.

During the construction of the mosque, clay-sand mixtures were used in the underground sections, while lime-sand mortar was applied in the above-ground parts. Restoration works carried out in different historical periods preserved the traditional characteristics of stone and brick masonry. Distinguished by its authentic architectural elements, the monument forms an integral part of Basqal’s rich cultural heritage.

Since 2022, BİMD Company has been preparing the design and cost-estimate documentation for the reconstruction, restoration, and construction works within the “Basqal” State Historical and Cultural Reserve. As part of the project, the Sheikh Mohammad Mosque — included in Azerbaijan’s register of cultural heritage monuments — is planned to be restored, reconstructed as an Archaeological Museum, and revived while preserving its historical and cultural value.
